A ladies’ day out at the Wedding Show

Ladies were out in droves for the B.C. Peace Region’s 18th annual Wedding Show at the Pomeroy Hotel in Fort St. John on Sunday.

Jewelry vendors, skin care specialists, photography services and more were on site to let brides know about the wide range of high quality services and products available locally.

Models in prom dresses, bridesmaid dresses and wedding gowns took to the runway in three different fashion shows scheduled throughout the day to display the different styles on offer.

Rows of dresses, provided by Storybook Wedding in Prince George, were available to try on and for purchase.

Posing with silly props, brides-to-be and their friends and family tested a photo booth on site for rent at weddings and other special events through Photorental.ca.

New to the show this year were a series of talks by industry experts, who took to the stage to share planning tips and tricks.

Connie Soychuk, owner of the Flower Hut, spoke about the rising popularity of artificial flowers in bouquets.

“The quality is not like they were 20 years ago, the quality is amazing,” she told the crowd. Many brides are choosing to have a single artificial rose in their otherwise fresh flower bouquet, she said.

“I can’t tell you, after I walked away, [how many] came back, ‘Which one’s the artificial?’ . . . They look so real.” The benefit with choosing artificial, she explained, is that they last.

Photographer Alisha Guild also shared her skillset with those gathered around, and encouraged brides-to-be to do their homework before choosing their wedding photographer.

“Ask to see full portfolios, ask to see their wedding work, from start to finish. Ask to sit down and go through an entire gallery and make sure the work that you’re hiring and paying for is going to be consistent,” she said.

“Look at it as art . . . [make sure] that the work that you’re hiring speaks to you and is something you’re going to want to hang on your walls.”

To help brides and bridesmaids get ready for the big day, fitness specialists were also among the vendors, including Leesa Stellmaker, owner of 30-Minute Hit, a ladies boxing and kickboxing circuit.

She was offering a group discount with wedding parties in mind.

Also on site, although less traditional at a wedding show, was Nerium International, an anti-aging skin care company, featuring a night and day cream, and advertising a new body contouring cream launching Oct. 19.

“People love to look healthy and glowing, it literally puts a glow to your skin. And then of course the body, if you’re honey mooning and all that sort of stuff it’s nice to have an option to take care of that,” said Teresa German, a senior director with the company.

Organizers broadened the scope of vendors to ensure that brides and their bridesmaids have all the options and planning ideas they need at their fingertips.

“The range of vendors . . . they’re giving people a chance to hear that we do have people here in this Peace Region that have lots of skills in the different areas, and that you can actually put on a great wedding here with the help of these people here in the Peace,” said Adam Reaburn, event organizer. “In many ways, it turns into a ladies’ day out.”
