Selby couple tie the knot despite worries the wedding would be a wash out

Lucy Emmott from Selby, North Yorkshire, married ‘the love of her life’ Pete Nickson at Yorkshire’s Selby Abbey today, in spite of all the obstacles.

The flooded River Ouse lies just 100 yards from the abbey and meant that two of the main routes to the venue were completely closed.

Nevertheless, Lucy and Pete, who got engaged in August 2014, still made it to the church on time – as did all the couple’s guests – allowing the wedding to go ahead as planned.

Lucy, who works in musical theatre, had everything crossed that the unprecedented flooding that has hit the north of England over the Christmas period, wouldn’t stop her wedding going ahead.

‘We’re hoping tomorrow that doesn’t happen and at the moment we’re looking okay, so fingers crossed it all goes well,’ she told the BBC yesterday.

‘At the moment our reception venue is okay, we’ve had quite a few guests who are slightly panicked that the water is very close,’ she added, explaining that her wedding photographer had water lapping at his front door.

But, it could have been so much worse. ‘There’s a couple of venues that we looked at for our wedding that are currently completely underwater in the city centre,’ she said.

And, in the end, with the help of a couple of pairs of wellies, and a determined wedding party, the day went off without a hitch.
