The new version of The Great Gatsby by Baz Luhrmann is probably one of the most marketed films in several years. Its joint with fashion (the dresses are by Prada, the man suits are by Brooks Brothers, and the jewels are Tiffany’s) has made the fashion industry go crazy with the event. How many articles about the Jazz Age style you’ve read in the past twelve months? As you’ve probably seen thousands of posts about the costumes of the latest version, I prefer to dedicate this entry to the 1974 version with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. Theoni V. Aldredge won the Oscar for Best Costume Design, and the movie helped Ralph Lauren rise to success, when he wasn’t too famous then.
Costume designer Theoni V. Aldredge identified Ralph Lauren’s talent for menswear and used several suits and shirts for Robert Redford’s character, Jay Gatsby. Even though the novel takes place in the 20′s Theoni added some strokes of trends from the 70′s. White chalk suits, bicolour shoes with die-cuts, mustard yellow vests, striped ties, sweaters worn over the shoulders… All of this made Robert Redford perform one of the most elegant and charismatic characters on cinema. And in two weeks! Theoni had to prepare and elaborate all the costumes in less than 15 days, a record for a production of this size. Luckily, the party scene was one of the last ones to be shot, so she had more time to choose all the looks for every extra.
Respecting Daisy Buchanan’s costumes (Mia Farrow), Aldredge used the classic delicate and breezy midi-dresses, waist-loose. They had to be really ample, as Mia Farrow was pregnant during the shooting. Lavender, yellow mimosa, silver, glitter, long pearl necklaces, and beads were a must on Daisy’s wardrobe. The yellow dress with the silk chiffon cape is one of the most iconic looks. According to Theoni, she always used lavender on all her films, as it reminded her of the sunsets in Greece, where she was born.
Theoni V. Aldredge worked mostly on theater, where she succeeded with the costume design of many plays. She won three Tony awards. Her greatest talent was translating a character’s psyche or a certain moment to wardrobe. In a happy scene the colours had to be happy too, even though they didn’t fit at that time’s conventionalism. For her, costume design always had an aura of mystery that was very attracting. One of her rules was that good design wasn’t evident nor forced.

Su unión con la moda (los vestidos son de Prada, los trajes de chaqueta de Brooks Brothers y las joyas de Tiffany’s) ha provocado que desde hace más de un año se haya estado hablando del estilo de los años 20. Como probablemente hayáis visto miles de posts sobre la película que se estrena mañana, prefiero dedicarle la entrada a la versión de 1974 protagonizada por Robert Redford y Mia Farrow. El diseño de vestuario fue uno de los elementos más aclamados del film (Theoni V. Aldredge se llevó el Oscar), y entre otros logros, lanzó a Ralph Lauren a la fama, quien antes apenas era conocido.
La diseñadora de vestuario Theoni V. Aldredge supo ver en Ralph Lauren su gran talento para la moda masculina y usó varios de sus trajes y camisas para el personaje de Robert Redford, Jay Gatsby. Aunque la novela transcurre en la Jazz Age, Theoni incorporó al vestuario pinceladas de las tendencias de los años 70. Trajes de color blanco tiza, zapatos bicolor con troquelados, chalecos amarillo mostaza, corbatas de rayas, jerseys a sobre los hombros… Todo ello hizo que Robert Redford interpretara uno de los papeles más elegantes y carismáticos del cine. ¡Y en dos semanas! Theoni tuvo que preparar y elaborar todo el vestuario en menos de 15 días, un tiempo record para una producción así. Por suerte, la escena de la fiesta, con numerosos extras, fue de las últimas en rodarse y Theoni tuvo dos meses para elegir cada look.
En cuanto al vestuario de Daisy Buchanan (Mia Farrow), Aldredge utilizó los clásicos vestidos delicados de largo midi y sueltos a la cintura. Tuvieron que ser aún más sueltos de lo normal porque Mia Farrow estaba embarazada durante el rodaje. El color lavanda, el amarillo mimosa, el plateado, los collares larguísimos de perlas, los brillos y los abalorios fueron imprescindibles en el vestuario de Daisy Buchanan. El vestido amarillo con la capa en crepe es uno de los trajes más icónicos. Según Theoni, el color lavanda siempre estuvo presente en sus películas, pues le recordaba a los atardeceres en Grecia, su país natal.
Theoni V. Aldredge se formó sobre todo en el teatro, donde triunfó con el vestuario de numerosas obras. Ganó tres premios Tony. Su gran talento era trasladar la psicología de un personaje o un momento determinado al vestuario. Si era un momento alegre, entonces los colores deberían ser alegres, aunque no encajaran en los convencionalismos de entonces. Para ella, el diseño de vestuario contenía un aura de misterio muy atrayente. Una de leyes es que el buen diseño es aquel que no resulta evidente ni forzado.
