10 reasons to watch The Newsroom

The Newsroom is one of the best TV series of the year, no matter how many discussions it has caused. Aaron Sorkin, the screenwriter, had us waiting after his success with The West Wing and everyone expected something great. He’s a genius writing dialogues, you can’t let your mind fly to other things a second because you’ll miss half of the story. In the Newsroom, it seems that they used a keyboard without a space bar (I read that here and it is so true :D). I wonder how Jeff Daniels can memorize such long paragraphs and say them without skipping a single word. Which doesn’t mean that a good dialogue has to be fast and characters need to say as many words as possible. A silence is a good dialogue too (tell that to those who decided to give Sofia Coppola an Oscar for Lost in Translation‘s script).

The show tells the story of Will McAvoy, the most famous TV presenter, from the day his girlfriend (Mackenzie McHale) is hired as  executive producer of the news show he presents. He was a despotic boss who didn’t know the names of his co-workers and did nothing to be a better journalist. Until Mackenzie arrives. They both start to defend a new idea of journalism (the real one, in fact), that helped people, and without hidden interests. The broadcast is fictional, but the news they report about are based on real facts and persons.

I’ve watched the first season (10 episodes) and I must say that I quite liked the show. I admit it has some flaws regarding the characters, and sometimes they are too moralistic. But they are passionate, and even if it’s an utopia, the idealized journalism they portray is encouraging. I’m really curious to see how the story evolves in the next season. Let’s see some of the best things about the show:

10 reasons to watch The Newsroom

– Jeff Daniels: He’s perfect for the role, he’s Will McAvoy! He’s managed to create a kind and adorable character, with flaws you can relate to, and a good sense of humor (though he ows it to Sorkin).

– Emily Mortimer: Even though Mackenzie (her character) is too naive and loud sometimes, I love how positive, openminded, energetical, and optimistical she is.

– The relationship between Will and McKenzie: They are meant to be together, but they can’t stop upsetting each other. Their discussions are fun.

– McKenzie’s shirts: Seriously, she has like the most awesome blouse collection I’ve ever seen. She wears a different shirt on every episode, and all of them are beautiful. Her style could be defined as «workaholic», but she compensates it with pencil skirts, bows on her blouses, subtle ruffles, and discreet prints.

– Dev Patel: He was great in Skins, phenomenal in Slumdog Millionaire, and even better in The Newsroom. His plays a supporting part, but his interventions are always funny and refreshing. He plays Neal Sampat, a journalist that loves the internet and is always trying to convince everyone that good journalism can be done on the Internet too. He writes Will’s blog and few people value his work.

– Charlie Skinner’s wardrobe: He’s the chairman of the TV channel and he always wears original prints on his suits and crazy bowties. He reminds me of Jiminy Cricket, I don’t know why.

– Olivia Munn:
She’s been the big revelation of the year (along with Megan from Mad Men). I have some doubts about her character though. She’s supposed to be an economics expert with several degrees and PhD’s, but she’s extremely naive and lets everyone underrate her. Let’s see how she evolves in the next season.

– The idea of journalism they defend:
OK. I know that the newsroom Aaron Sorkin portrays is a complete utopia, but why do most of the negative critics point to that? If TV series had to be realistic, most of them wouldn’t exist. If all hospitals were like Grey’s Anatomy, going to the doctor would be much more interesting. It is good to see that proper journalism is possible, even if it’s just fictional. And it’s not bad to be reminded that journalism should pursue the truth and get justice.

– Don Keefer (Maggie’s on/off boyfriend): At first he was quite obnoxious, but he becames likable with time.

– Because it’s about journalists.

PS: You can watch the episodes in HBO if you’re in the US. The next season will be released next year.
PPS: Yes, Jane Fonda stars in the show.

——————–

Razones para ver The Newsroom:

  5. Me has creado una curiosidad asombrosa.
    Gracias!

  6. It’s appropriate time to make some plans for the future and it’ѕ time to be
happy. I’ve read this post and if I could I desire to suggest you some interesting things or suggestions. Perhaps you could write next articles referring to this article. I desire to read even more things about it!

  7. To keep your clothing clean when packing for a trip, place your footwear inside socks. Then spot these socks inside plastic bags. Footwear hold odors and dirt gets on the bottom of them effortlessly. By placing the shoes inside socks and a plastic bag you will preserve odors and dirt at bay.
