Out of Africa – Wardrobe design by Milena Canonero

Out of Africa is one of my favourite films, and I objectively think that it is a true masterpiece. It was directed by Sydney Pollack in 1985. Meryl Streep is amazing playing Karen, a Baroness from Denmark that moves to a farm in Kenia. And well, Robert Redford is just brilliant. You probably know the plot (if you haven’t seen the movie, you better do it now!!). It’s one of Meryl Streep’s best parts of her career, it’s astounding how she manages to express in such a real way the feelings of the character without overreacting. Just only the hair washing scene with Robert deserves an Oscar, you can almost feel the water drops falling down your forehead as you watch it.
The costume design is by Milena Canonero, maybe today’s most important wardrobe designer. Her filmography includes Chariots of fire, A clockwork Orange, or Marie Antoinette. She’s been awarded with three Oscars.
The story takes place in Kenia, and some parts in Denmark. The outfits Meryl wears could be divided whether they are to go hunting, to work in the farm, the ones she wears when she goes to the city centre, and the party outfits sent from Paris (the Baroness had them sent to her). All of them are in the same palette of natural tones, beige, ivory, navy, dark green or black. Milena decided that because she preferred to use color for the native’s outfits instead, and make Meryl and Robert match the landscape. She used resistant clothes, and also fragile and delicate linen and silks. A very good allegory of Karen’s personality, a very strong woman, but with some fears. The costumes manage to make Meryl/Karen a true heroine, a woman that doesn’t hesitate to travel by horse for days, work in the farm. Karen hates the secondary position women were relegated to, and wears ties with her shirts and long skirts. With this movie, Milena influenced the safari looks and created an unforgettable iconographic image.
Milena contacted Karen Blixen’s family to investigate about her style. The story starts in 1914 and ends in 1924. Milena had to design the natives’ outfits too, she studied the inhabitants of Kenya and Somalia. Richard Leakley, anthropologist, helped her with that. The costumes were made in London, and in a studio in Narobi, during three months before the shooting began. Milena says she prefers to use real vintage clothing, but almost no safari clothes from that period remain. She only found a safari shirt in Morris Angel, a costume shop in London. Hats are a very important part too, Karen confessed that buying a new hat was what made her happy. You can see lots of hats in the movie.
A really good film and very moving. And with a woman to follow her example.

Memorias de África es una de mis películas favoritas, y creo objetivamente que es una auténtica obra maestra. La dirigió Sydney Pollack en 1985. Meryl Streep está increíble en su papel de Karen, una danesa que se traslada a vivir a una granja en Kenia, y Robert Redford ya ni digamos. Fenomenales los dos. El argumento seguro que ya lo conocéis (si no la habéis visto, ¡¡a verla ahora mismo!!) Meryl Streep hace uno los mejores papeles de su carrera, es maravilloso cómo consigue expresar de manera tan real y nada sobreactuada los sentimientos de la protagonista. Sólo la escena en la que Robert Redford le lava el pelo es de Oscar, casi podemos notar el agua cayéndonos por la frente.
El diseño de vestuario es obra de Milena Canonero, quizás la diseñadora de cine más importante hoy en día. En su filmografía hay títulos tan memorables como Carros de fuego, La naranja mecánica, o Marie Antoinette. Tiene tres Oscars por su carrera (de momento).
La historia transcurre en Kenia, y hay algunas escenas en Dinamarca. Los conjuntos que lleva Meryl se podrían dividir según sean para salir de caza, los que usa para trabajar en la granja, los que se lleva cuando va al centro de la ciudad, y los vestidos de fiesta, traídos sobre todo de París (la baronesa hacía que se los enviaran). Todos están dentro de la misma paleta de los tonos tierra, beige, azul marino, verde inglés o negro. La razón de no usar colores llamativos es que Milena prefirió dejarlos para el vestuario de los nativos, y además, así los estilismos de Meryl y de Robert se mimetizaban mejor con el paisaje. Por un lado usa tejidos fuertes y resistentes, y por otro, lino y sedas. Un contraste que revela muy bien la personalidad de Karen, segura de sí misma, inconformista, pero con miedos. El vestuario logra convertir a Meryl en una verdadera heroína, una mujer luchadora y valiente, que no le importa viajar días en caballo o trabajar la tierra. Odia la posición secundaria a la que relegan a las mujeres, y no duda en llevar corbata con una camisa y falda larga. Con esta película, Milena influyó para siempre en el estilo safari e instauró una imagen iconográfica inolvidable.
Para diseñar el vestuario, Milena se puso en contacto con los familiares de Karen Blixen, la auténtica protagonista de la historia y autora del libro en el que se basa la película. El vestuario abarca diez años en el tiempo, desde 1914 hasta 1924, y además de los conjuntos que lucen Meryl y Robert, también tuvo que diseñar los atuendos de los nativos, para los que estudió a los habitantes de Somalia y de Kenia. En esa tarea la ayudó Richard Leakley, antropólogo. Los trajes se elaboraron en Londres, y también en un estudio en Nairobi, durante los tres meses previos al rodaje. Milena dice que prefiere usar ropa auténtica vintage, pero por desgracia, la mayoría de las prendas de esa época no sobrevivieron. Tan sólo encontró una camisa safari en Morris Angel, una tienda de vestuario en Londres. Los sombreros son otra parte importante. Karen llegó a confesar en uno de sus escritos que comprar un nuevo sombrero era lo que le alegraba el día. En la película podemos ver muchísimos.
En definitiva, una película absolutamente genial y muy emocionante. Además, con una mujer digna de servir de ejemplo.
