‘Two for the road’: Audrey Hepburn wears Paco Rabanne, Mary Quant…

two for the road

Two for the road was filmed in 1967 with Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney, who play a couple in trouble. It has one of the best costumes on film. Audrey’s outfits were specially designed by genius such as Paco Rabanne, Mary Quant (she used the mini skirt for the first time), Michèle Rosier from V de V label, Ken Scott, Tuffin and Foale, and André Courrèges. The film represents a very powerful document of the best designers from the late 60’s, and it promoted the Mod and Swinging London style to every corner.

As you might be asking yourself, yes, it’s one of the few films in which Hubert de Givenchy didn’t design Audrey’s clothes. Stanley Donen, director of the movie, wanted a different air to the movie and suggested Audrey to work with different designers on this occasion. Audrey didn’t like the idea at first, but she realized that it would be good for her to try new things, and she was very happy with the result. This change was very favorable for Audrey, as fashion was rapidly transforming and Givenchy’s classic designs weren’t hip anymore. It made Audrey attractive to younger audiences too. Girls were wearing mini skirts now and experimenting with new materials such as PVC and metal was in.

The movie contains more than 20 different outfits for Audrey Swimsuits, dresses, a Burberry trenchcoat, sunglasses, pullovers, jeans, shirts, and an unforgettable jacket. There’s even a rugby-inspired outfit (the red and yellow dress). As the movie tells the story of their marriage throughout the years, costume plays a very important part, as you can see how Audrey’s personality evolves and becomes more mature.
