These photoshoot was published in the November 2006 issue of Vanity Fair. It was photographed by Norman Jean Roy at Clooney’s house in Como Lake. The editorial portrays Gemma Ward and George Clooney as the typical couple of classic Hollywood stars, like Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. It is a really beautiful spread!

The first episode of Sex and the City was aired exactly 15 years ago today. One of the best styled TV shows thanks to Patricia Fields‘ eclectic and original taste. Fashion was reinterpreted on every episode in thousands of way, there wasn’t any written rule about costume design, and you couldn’t find a patron for Fields’ choices. But every character remained loyal to its own style. Carrie, risky and never boring. Charlotte, traditional and conservative, with a lot of glamour. Miranda, a great example of working-girl outfits. And Samantha, well, she was just Samantha.

John Galliano, Louboutin, Oscar de la Renta, Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo, Vera Wang, Ralph Lauren, Fendi Gucci, Vivienne Westwood, Chloé, Prada… A parade of labels, it-bags and impossible combinations.

Meryl Streep began her acting career in 1977 with Julia, a film starring Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave. Her jump to the spotlight was in Woody Allen’s Manhattan, in which she played Allen’s ex-wife in fiction. A secondary role, but she was unforgettable. Only two years later after her first appearance on the screen she would win the Oscar for her intense but self-restrained performance in Kramer vs. Kramer, in which she plays a mother that abandons his son and then fights to get him back. Meryl’s work is so convincing that just by looking at the photos you can feel the emotion.

In Kramer vs. Kramer, Streep wears an iconic Burberry trench coat, in the climax scene of the movie. All her character wears in beige and brown shades, like her co-star Dustin Hoffman. He wears a trench too, but as Clothes on film points out, it’s Aquascutum. Autumn in New York is perfectly portrayed on the film, and that’s in the costume design too, by Ruth Morley.

This Meryl Streep’s part is one of the most elegant characters on cinema thanks to her sobriety and her class.

Su salto al estrellato sería en Manhattan, de Woody Allen, en la que interpretaba a la ex-mujer de Allen en la ficción. Un papel secundario, pero que dejó huella. Sólo dos años después de su primera aparición en pantalla ganaba el Oscar por su intensa y comedida interpretación de una madre que abandona a su hijo pequeño para luego luchar por recuperarlo en Kramer vs. Kramer. Su trabajo es tan convincente que sólo con ver las fotografías de la película se puede notar el sentimiento.

En Kramer vs. Kramer, Streep luce un icónico trench de Burberry en una de las escenas culmen de la película. Todo su personaje viste en tonos de beige y marrón, igual que su compañero de reparto Dustin Hoffman. Él también lleva un trench, pero tal y como apuntan en Clothes on Film, se trata de un Aquascutum. En este film el otoño en Nueva York se respira en cada fotograma, y el vestuario, obra de Ruth Morley, es 100% acorde al ambiente.

Este personaje de Meryl Streep es uno de los más elegantes del cine por su sobriedad y clase.

Sofia Coppola has presented in Cannes The Bling Ring, her new film. With a cast headed by Emma Watson, the movie tells the (real) story of the band that got into the houses of several celebrities in Hollywood to steal their jewellery and clothes. On this post you’ll read more about these teens that were charged for +1M $ robbery.

The costume design is based on the reality shows style, fashion victims, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Miranda Kerr… A very interesting mix that has been really great achieved judging by the trailers and pictures we’ve seen. Here you have a selection of the outfits shown on the film.

Con un reparto encabezado por Emma Watson, el film cuenta la historia (real) de la banda conocida como ‘The Bling Ring’ que asaltó casas de famosos en Hollywood para robarles ropa y joyas. En este post podréis saber más sobre estos jóvenes que se hicieron con más de un millón de dólares en objetos robados.

El vestuario se inspira sobre todo en el estilo reality americano, las fashion victims, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Miranda Kerr… Una mezcla muy curiosa y bien conseguida según podemos ver en el trailer y las primeras imágenes. Se estrenará en agosto. Aquí tenéis una selección de los estilismos que aparecen en el film.

Costume designer Theoni V. Aldredge identified Ralph Lauren’s talent for menswear and used several suits and shirts for Robert Redford’s character, Jay Gatsby. Even though the novel takes place in the 20′s Theoni added some strokes of trends from the 70′s. White chalk suits, bicolour shoes with die-cuts, mustard yellow vests, striped ties, sweaters worn over the shoulders… All of this made Robert Redford perform one of the most elegant and charismatic characters on cinema. And in two weeks! Theoni had to prepare and elaborate all the costumes in less than 15 days, a record for a production of this size. Luckily, the party scene was one of the last ones to be shot, so she had more time to choose all the looks for every extra.

Respecting Daisy Buchanan’s costumes (Mia Farrow), Aldredge used the classic delicate and breezy midi-dresses, waist-loose. They had to be really ample, as Mia Farrow was pregnant during the shooting. Lavender, yellow mimosa, silver, glitter, long pearl necklaces, and beads were a must on Daisy’s wardrobe. The yellow dress with the silk chiffon cape is one of the most iconic looks. According to Theoni, she always used lavender on all her films, as it reminded her of the sunsets in Greece, where she was born.

Theoni V. Aldredge worked mostly on theater, where she succeeded with the costume design of many plays. She won three Tony awards. Her greatest talent was translating a character’s psyche or a certain moment to wardrobe. In a happy scene the colours had to be happy too, even though they didn’t fit at that time’s conventionalism. For her, costume design always had an aura of mystery that was very attracting. One of her rules was that good design wasn’t evident nor forced.

Creo que la nueva versión de El Gran Gatsby de Baz Luhrmann es una de las películas más promocionadas de los últimos tiempos. Su unión con la moda (los vestidos son de Prada, los trajes de chaqueta de Brooks Brothers y las joyas de Tiffany’s) ha provocado que desde hace más de un año se haya estado hablando del estilo de los años 20. Como probablemente hayáis visto miles de posts sobre la película que se estrena mañana, prefiero dedicarle la entrada a la versión de 1974 protagonizada por Robert Redford y Mia Farrow. El diseño de vestuario fue uno de los elementos más aclamados del film (Theoni V. Aldredge se llevó el Oscar), y entre otros logros, lanzó a Ralph Lauren a la fama, quien antes apenas era conocido.

La diseñadora de vestuario Theoni V. Aldredge supo ver en Ralph Lauren su gran talento para la moda masculina y usó varios de sus trajes y camisas para el personaje de Robert Redford, Jay Gatsby. Aunque la novela transcurre en la Jazz Age, Theoni incorporó al vestuario pinceladas de las tendencias de los años 70. Trajes de color blanco tiza, zapatos bicolor con troquelados, chalecos amarillo mostaza, corbatas de rayas, jerseys a sobre los hombros… Todo ello hizo que Robert Redford interpretara uno de los papeles más elegantes y carismáticos del cine. ¡Y en dos semanas! Theoni tuvo que preparar y elaborar todo el vestuario en menos de 15 días, un tiempo record para una producción así. Por suerte, la escena de la fiesta, con numerosos extras, fue de las últimas en rodarse y Theoni tuvo dos meses para elegir cada look.

En cuanto al vestuario de Daisy Buchanan (Mia Farrow), Aldredge utilizó los clásicos vestidos delicados de largo midi y sueltos a la cintura. Tuvieron que ser aún más sueltos de lo normal porque Mia Farrow estaba embarazada durante el rodaje. El color lavanda, el amarillo mimosa, el plateado, los collares larguísimos de perlas, los brillos y los abalorios fueron imprescindibles en el vestuario de Daisy Buchanan. El vestido amarillo con la capa en crepe es uno de los trajes más icónicos. Según Theoni, el color lavanda siempre estuvo presente en sus películas, pues le recordaba a los atardeceres en Grecia, su país natal.

Theoni V. Aldredge se formó sobre todo en el teatro, donde triunfó con el vestuario de numerosas obras. Ganó tres premios Tony. Su gran talento era trasladar la psicología de un personaje o un momento determinado al vestuario. Si era un momento alegre, entonces los colores deberían ser alegres, aunque no encajaran en los convencionalismos de entonces. Para ella, el diseño de vestuario contenía un aura de misterio muy atrayente. Una de leyes es que el buen diseño es aquel que no resulta evidente ni forzado.

My week with Marilyn narrates the story of the actress with Colin Clark, a young assistant of Sir Laurence Olivier. It’s supposed to be based on true events. Even though it is impossible to repeat Marilyn’s unique attitude and appeal, Michelle Williams did a great job. Eddie Redmayne, Kenneth Branagh, Julia Ormond and Emma Watson also star in the film.

The movie’s costume designer was Jill Taylor. With the help of vintage photographs, Sotheby’s auctions catalogs, and of course, intensive investigation, Jill managed to recreate the off-duty looks of Marilyn. She wore a lot of turtlenecks, pullovers, and elegant and discreet outfits when she wasn’t on the spotlight. Also, some iconic outfits are displayed too, like the memorable grey dress with the white coat she wears when getting off the plane with Arthur Miller. All of the clothes had to be made from scratch, as renting the original dresses was too expensive. The result is really great, glamour as its best.

Mi semana con Marilyn cuenta la historia de la relación entre la actriz y Colin Clark, un joven asistente de Sir Laurence Olivier. Supuestamente está basada en hechos reales. Aunque es imposible reproducir la actitud única y el appeal de Marilyn, Michelle Williams hace un gran papel. También aparecen Eddie Redmayne, Kenneth Branagh, Emma Watson, Julia Ormond…

La diseñadora de vestuario fue Jill Taylor. Con la ayuda de fotografías vintage, catálogos de subastas de Sotheby’s, y por supuesto, una investigación exhaustiva, Jill consiguió recrear los conjuntos más off-duty de Marilyn. Llevaba muchos cuellos vueltos, jerseys, y otros estilismos discretos y elegantes cuando no era el centro de los focos (deliberadamente al menos). También hay varios estilismos icónicos que han sido reproducidos al milímetro, como el inolvidable vestido gris y el abrigo blanco que luce al descender del avión con Arthur Miller. Todas las prendas tuvieron que hacerse desde cero, ya que alquilar los vestidos originales resultaba muy caro. El trabajo final es fantástico, glamour en su máximo esplendor.

One of the best model of the last decade, Natalia Vodianova, stars next to Jonathan Rhys Meyers in Belle du Seigneur. It’s not her first film appearance, she acted in Clash of the Titans too, and some other titles. The movie began shooting in Genova in 2010 and we’ll see it on the cinemas very soon. It’s already been premiered in Russia, and it will be showcased in France in June. Ulyana Sergeenko, one of Vodianova’s closest friends, attended the screening in Moscow.

The movie is based on the homonymous novel by Albert Cohen, and it narrates the love-story between a jew from the League of Nations and a married Swiss aristocrat. It takes place in 1930. The book belongs to a series of four novels. Glenio Bonder, director of the movie, was a former Brazilian diplomat in the United States and had this project in mind for years. He died in 2011 due to a long illness. The novel is a satire of the administration and the diplomacy, so that ambient will be very well portrayed thanks to Bonder’s experience.

Magdalena Labuz is the costume designer of the film, and from what we’ve seen, Vodianova must have felt at home: every outfit could be chosen for a fashion editorial. There are a lot of pleats, embroidery, satin… But it’s not too baroque at all. Magdalena’s main inspiration was the famous Delphos dress by Mariano Fortuny, the master of pleats. For the film, several replicas of the dress were made by Charles and Patricia Lester (luxury textile experts) by request of Magdalena. You’ll also spot Fortuny patterns on the decoration of the sets. Natalia Vodianova wore an original Fortuny dress at the MET Ball in 2008 (thanks Jackie Gloves for the tip).

According to some critics, it’s one of the best works of Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Natalia Vodianova plays the part really well too. I can’t wait to see it!

Una de las mejores modelos de la última década, Natalia Vodianova, protagoniza junto a Jonathan Rhys Meyers la película Belle du Seigneur, un drama romántico. No es su primer papel en el cine, también actuó en Furia de Titanes y en otros títulos. Se empezó a rodar en Génova en 2010 y pronto podremos verla en las pantallas.. El film ya se ha estrenado en Rusia, país natal de la modelo, y estará en los cines de Francia en junio (no hay fecha para su estreno en España). A la première en Moscú acudió Ulyana Sergeenko, una de las mejores amigas de Natalia.

La película está basada en la novela homónima de Albert Cohen, y narra la historia de amor entre un judío de la Liga de las Naciones y una aristócrata suiza casada en los años 30. El libro forma parte de una serie de cuatro novelas. El director Glenio Bonder, ex-diplomático brasileño en los Estados Unidos, tenía el proyecto entre manos desde hacía años. La novela es una sátira de la burocracia y de los diplomáticos, así que ese ambiente estará muy bien retratado gracias a la experiencia de Bonder. Esta ha sido su primera y última película, pues el realizador falleció en 2011 tras una larga enfermedad.

El vestuario es obra de Magdalena Labuz, y por las imágenes que se han podido ver hasta ahora, Vodianova se habrá sentido como en casa: los estilismos son dignos de una editorial de moda. Predominan los plisados, la pedrería, el satén, los bordados… Pero sin resultar recargado en absoluto. La principal inspiración de Labuz fue el famoso vestido de Delphos creado por Mariano Fortuny. Para la película encargó varias réplicas a Charles y Patricia Lester (expertos en textil de lujo), y también se pueden observar otras telas del modisto en los decorados. Natalia Vodianova lució un Fortuny original en la gala del Met en 2008 (gracias Jackie Gloves por la pista).

Según los críticos, se trata de una de las mejores actuaciones de Jonathan Rhys Meyers, y Natalia Vodianova también borda su papel. Qué ganas de verla.

Edith Head (costume designer) and Grace Kelly worked closely together to create the costumes Hitchcock desired for his movie. It is one of the most elegant characters we’ve seen on film, and thanks to Edith’s talent, the five outfits shown on the screen could belong on the runway of a great fashion designer. Besides being a great movie in terms or narrative and cinematography, Rear Window is also a magnificent document of costume design.

Alfred Hitchcock had a clear idea of how he wanted Grace to look like. The costumes needed to show the character’s evolution with the story. He envisaged each costume to inevitably aid the development of Kelly’s character to the audience, add to the conflict within the film and assist in advancing the narrative: to emphasize Kelly’s introduction to the audience she wears a three quarter length evening gown comprising a black v-neck top and full white skirt embellished with black beading, identifying the character’s love of fashion and affluent social status. And when she breaks into the neighbor’s apartment she wears a floral dress designed to accentuate Grace’s femininity.

To help Edith Head with the sketching, Grace Sprague came from New York. Sprague was Edith’s sketch artist from 1954 to 1963. They worked together on this film, using the stipulations for each costume that Hitchcock had noted on the script.

Edith Head y Grace Kelly trabajaron juntas para crear el vestuario que Hitchcock deseaba para la película. Es uno de los personajes más elegantes que se han visto en el cine, y gracias al talento de Edith, los cinco conjuntos que aparecen en la película podrían servir también para el desfile de un gran diseñador. Además de ser una gran película en términos de narrativa y guión, La ventana indiscreta es también un fantástico documento del diseño de vestuario.

Alfred Hitchcock tenía una idea muy clara de cómo quería que Grace se mostrara en el film. Los vestidos tenían que evidenciar la evolución del personaje con la historia. Percibía cada conjunto como una ayuda al desarrollo del personaje frente a la audiencia, para añadir conflicto y ayudar a anticipar la narración.

Por ejemplo, para enfatizar la primera aparición de Kelly, lleva un vestido de noche tres cuartos con top negro y cuello en V, y una amplia falda blanca adornada con cuentas en negro, demostrando el amor del personaje hacia la moda y su estatus social. Y cuando entra en el apartamento del vecino, luce un vestido floreado para acentuar la feminidad del personaje.

Para ayudar a Edith Head con el diseño, Grace Sprague voló desde Nueva York. Sprague fue la autora de los bocetos de Edith de 1954 a 1963 y colaboraron en el vestuario de esta película, usando las notas para cada look que Hitchcock había aclarado en el guión.
