Mad Men Season 6 Premiere: Costume review

I attended the Mad Men Season Six premiere yesterday in Madrid and watched the first two episodes of the season. The series has begun with promising outfits! Janie Bryant, costume designer of the show, has demonstrated again her ability to recreate a certain period.

SPOILERS! The first episode starts in Hawaii with Don and Megan. Colors and more colors. Two unforgettable print dresses, round sunnies, hats, bikinis, flower necklaces… Megan wears tones of purple and violet, and Don wears pales with touches of blue, like he did in California. Oh, and a Hawaiian print shirt!

Back in New York the contrast is dramatic, not only with the holiday scenes, but the previous season. It seems like years had gone by. The men at SCDP have grown sideburns, beards… There’s a different feeling in the ambient. Janie said she wanted to show an evident contrast, specially with Don and the rest of the office. While Pete, Roger, Harry and Ken have evolved to a more modern style, Don still wears the same suits. Joan, who barely appears on the episodes, looks more mature in a purple suit, but still risky, with frills, and her usual brooch. It shows her new position as partner in the agency. Pete seems to have grown up too, and looks more serious.

Betty has been transformed into an older woman, more maternal (only in appearance, of course). She dies her hair black (imitating Megan? to show authority?). For this radical change, Janie decided to pair it with a purple suit, a colour Betty had never worn before.

I’d also like to bring out Megan’s leopard coat, Sterling’s sport jacket (Roger is great in both episodes), the pullovers worn below sleeveless dresses (Megan and Peggy use them), Don’s plaid jackets, Sally’s mature look… Can’t wait to watch the next episode!

PS: I haven’t commented the argument because I could continue writing for days, but just to make it clear, it’s a really great start. Televised metaphysics.

Ayer asistí al estreno de los dos primeros episodios de la sexta temporada de Mad Men, y vaya, la serie ha empezado con varios estilismos muy prometedores. Janie Bryant, la diseñadora de vestuario, ha vuelto a demostrar su gran capacidad de recrear una época.

SPOILERS! El primer episodio comienza en Hawaii con Don y Megan. Colores y más colores. Dos vestidos estampados inolvidables, gafas redondas de pasta, sombreros de ala ancha, bikinis, collares de flores… Megan luce tonos de violeta y morado, y Don lleva tonos pálidos con toques de azul, similar a sus conjuntos de California. ¡Incluso una camisa hawaiiana!

Ya de vuelta en Nueva York, el contraste llega de golpe, no sólo con las escenas de las vacaciones, sino respecto a cómo acabó la temporada anterior. Parece que hubieran pasado años. Los hombres de SCDP se han dejado barba, patillas… Se respira otro aire en el ambiente. Janie dijo que quiso hacer un contraste evidente, sobre todo entre Don, que luce los mismos trajes, y los demás, que han evolucionado. Joan, que apenas aparece en los episodios, luce un traje morado que le da un aspecto más serio, pero a la vez atrevido, con pequeños volantes y demás, y sin prescindir de su broche y de marcar la figura. Una manera de mostrar su nueva posición como socia en la agencia. Pete parece haber madurado y sus trajes son más de adulto.

Betty ha dejado atrás su elegancia y ahora es una señora. Al final del capítulo se tiñe de morena (¿por Megan? ¿para parecer más fuerte?). Para este cambio radical de look, Janie decidió acompañarlo de un traje morado, un color que nunca había lucido antes Betty.

Destacaría el abrigo de leopardo de Megan, la chaqueta sport azul de Sterling (enorme Roger en los dos episodios), los jerseys debajo de vestidos sin mangas que llevan Megan y Peggy, las chaquetas de cuadros de Don, el look más maduro de Sally… ¡La serie promete!

PD: No he comentado el argumento porque podría pasarme un día entero escribiendo, pero, en resumen, gran comienzo para la serie. Metafísica televisada.

How things ended on Mad Men Season 5

Mad Men Season 6 first episode is out today! After a nine months wait, Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce are back again. We missed them!

The past season was full of symbolism, drama, changes and doubt. But it also was the one with more fun moments, and with more dynamic action. I’ve heard that Season Six will make a radical change, maybe a flash-forward. I prefer to wait to see it!

It’s been so long that I had to watch the last episode again to remember how things ended at Madison Avenue:

HOW THINGS ENDED ON MAD MEN SEASON 5

- Peggy has left the agency and now works at CGC with Ted Chaough, their competitor. Don told her he’s really proud of her. It seems things are going well for her, but she still seeks Don’s approval.
- Lane died (he committed suicide because of his debts, aggravated when Don found out that he had falsified the partner’s signatures to cash a check, which caused Don’s fury towards Lane). The label received $175.000 from the insurance company, and Don gave Lane’s widow $50.000. She accepted the money, but told Don that he didn’t do it as a kind act and he did it to clean his conscience.
- Beth went through shock therapy, and forgot about Pete and her. Pete went to visit her at the hospital, and was devastated when he saw that she didn’t remember him. On the train back home, he got into a fight with Beth’s husband and got punched. Trudy believed Pete’s story (that he had had a car accident), and she decided that they had to buy a flat for Pete in NY (what he always had wanted)
- Megan had lost all hopes about her acting career, which was causing problems on her marriage, and asked Don to get her a part at a commercial, but he refused. Then, after watching Megan’s audition tape, he reconsidered it and got her the part.
- Don had a toothache and went to the dentist to have he molar removed. During the anesthesia he went through visions of his dead brother, who blamed him for his death told him that “it isn’t the tooth that’s rotten”. Also, Don had strong feelings of guilt after Lane’s death.
- Betty still has overweight problems, and is envious about Megan’s beauty, so she tells Sally about Don’s marriage with Ann.
- Roger keeps taking LSD and has an affair with Megan’s mother.
- The episode ends with Don at a bar, in the moment that a girl approaches and asks him if he’s alone. You can hear the song “You only live twice”. What did he answer? We’ll know soon!

Hoy se estrena en Estados Unidos la sexta temporada de Mad Men. Después de nueve meses de espera, por fin vuelve Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. ¡Les echábamos de menos!

La quinta temporada estuvo plagada de simbolismos, dramas, cambios, y dudas. Pero también fue la que ha tenido más momentos cómicos, y la que ha tenido una acción mucho más dinámica. Se ha comentado que la sexta temporada dará un cambio radical, quizás con un salto en el tiempo. ¡Mejor dejar que nos sorprendan!

Ha pasado tanto tiempo que he tenido que ver de nuevo el último episodio para recordar cómo habían acabado las cosas por Madison Avenue:

CÓMO ACABÓ LA QUINTA TEMPORADA

- Peggy se ha ido de la agencia a CGC, la competencia, con Ted Chaough. Don le dijo que estaba muy orgulloso de ella. Parece que las cosas le van bien, pero aún busca la aprobación de Don.
- Lane ha muerto (se suicidó a causa de las deudas y después de que Don averiguara que había falsificado las firmas de los socios para cobrar un cheque de la empresa, lo que desató la furia de Don). La empresa se ha llevado 175.000$ del seguro, y Don le dio a la viuda de Lane 50.000$ sin que nadie lo supiera, excepto Joan (que lo sabe todo). La viuda aceptó el dinero, pero le echó en cara a Don que no lo hacía por bondad, sino por amor propio.
- Beth se ha sometido a una terapia de electroshock, y ha olvidado que ella y Pete eran amantes. Pete fue a visitarla al hospital y se quedó devastado cuando ella no se acordaba de él. Al volver a casa, en el tren, se peleó con el marido de Beth y acabó recibiendo un puñetazo. Judy se creyó que los golpes habían sido por un accidente de coche y le dijo a Pete que comprarían un piso para él en Nueva York (lo que siempre había querido Pete).
- Megan había perdido toda la esperanza sobre el futuro de su carrera como actriz, lo que estaba causando problemas en su matrimonio. Le pidió a Don que intentara que la contratasen para un anuncio, a lo que él se negó. Pero cuando Don vio el vídeo de la audición de Megan, se quedó ensimismado y consigue que la elijan a ella.
- Don tenía dolor de muelas y fue al dentista para que le hicieran una extracción. Durante la anestesia tuvo visiones en las que aparecía su hermano fallecido, donde le echaba la culpa de su muerte y le decía que “no es la muela lo que está podrido en ti”. Además, seguía con un fuerte sentimiento de culpabilidad por la muerte de Lane.
- Betty seguía con problemas de sobrepeso, y le contó a Sally, en un ataque de celos por la belleza de Megan, que Don había estado casado con Ann.
- Roger sigue tomando LSD y tiene un affair con la madre de Megan.
- El capítulo acaba con Don en un bar, en el momento en el que una chica le pregunta si está solo. Mientras, suena “You Only Live Once” ¿Qué respondería? ¡Pronto lo sabremos!

Inside ‘House of Cards’ wardrobe

House of Cards has become one of my favourite series, and in less than one week I saw the thirteen episodes of the first season. This series has been widely discussed, not only for the argument and the cast, but also because of the original way of production and release. It’s the first series to be produced by Netflix (the website to watch tv series and movies), and the full season was released at the same time on February 1st. This way, we haven’t had to wait one week to watch every episode, and we could enjoy a House of Cards marathon ;)

The actors are Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright and Kate Mara. It shows in a very direct way the parallel mechanisms that run in the American Congress. The manipulation, the lies, the favours… Kevin Spacey plays Frank Underwood, an influential congressman that starts a revenge plan after when he’s not chosen Secretary of State, in order to become President. Her wife Claire, fantastically played by Robin Wright, helps him with his strategies while she tries to maintain her foundation. On the other side is Zoe Barnes (Kate Mara), a young journalist that is used by Frank to leak news that favor Frank. Zoe uses those exclusives and scoops to be promoted in the newspaper. There’s another important figure, Rep. Peter Russo, a very interesting character, and also Frank’s assistant.

The costume design is by Tom Broecker, and he has done a great job. Undoubtedly, the best character (stylishly speaking) is Claire. She has an impeccable and elegant wardrobe that shows how rigid and strict she is. It makes a great contrast with Zoe, who doesn’t care about fashion at all, but knows the power of it and uses it to get what she wants. You’ll see dresses by Narciso Rodríguez, Gucci, Armani, even Zara in Zoe’s case. Respecting the men’s wardrobe, Frank’s style is elegant and with references to the English style. Remy Danton from SanCorp is extremely elegant too. His suits are by Tom Ford (including the shirts) and Hugo Boss.

House of Cards se ha convertido en una de mis series favoritas, y en menos de una semana vi los trece capítulos de la primera temporada. Esta serie, aparte de por el reparto y el argumento, ha sido tema de conversación ya que se trata de la primera serie producida por Netflix (el site de “alquiler” de películas y series de Estados Unidos), y los trece episodios fueron estrenados el 1 de febrero. Así no ha habido que esperar una semana cada vez para ver el próximo capítulo (y hemos podido ver cuatro seguidos… ;)

La serie está protagonizada por Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright y Kate Mara. Muestra de manera directa los mecanismos paralelos que hacen funcionar al Congreso estadounidense, la manipulación, las mentiras, los favores… Kevin Spacey interpreta a Frank Underwood, un poderoso congresista que comienza un plan de venganza al no ser nombrado Secretario de Estado con vistas a convertirse en Presidente. Su mujer Claire, interpretada genialmente por Robin Wright, le ayuda en su empeño mientras intenta que su fundación se mantenga a flote. En el otro lado está Zoe Barnes (Kate Mara), una joven periodista que es utilizada por Frank para desvelar noticias que le interesan a él. Ella por su parte usa esas filtraciones y exclusivas para avanzar en su trabajo. También juega un papel importante Peter Russo, un diputado (muy interesante su personaje), y el asistente de Frank.

El diseño de vestuario está ideado por Tom Broecker, y ha hecho una labor fantástica. Sin duda, el personaje clave (estilísticamente hablando) es Claire, con un armario impecable y elegantísimo, mostrando lo rígida y comedida que es. Hace un gran contraste con Zoe, a quien no le importa demasiado la moda, pero que sabe utilizarla para conseguir lo que quiere. En los capítulos veréis vestidos de Narciso Rodríguez, Gucci, Armani, incluso de Zara en el caso de Zoe. En cuanto al vestuario masculino, el estilo de Frank es elegante y con referencias al estilo inglés. También es tremendamente elegante Remy Danton, de SanCorp. Sus trajes son de Tom Ford (incluidas las camisas), y de Hugo Boss.

Veamos los detalles del vestuario de cada personaje…

CLAIRE UNDERWOOD (Robin Wright)

The wardrobe of Claire is designed to show her strict and precise personality. For this reason, everything looks taylor-made. She wears designer clothes that have been modified to perfectly fit her body. Claire is a rigid person, she has everything under control. She never wears extravagant outfits nor prints, she only uses tones of black, grey, white and navy, in minimalist shapes. Even her jogging outfits are impeccable and polished. She usually wears pencil-skirts, and for the special occasions (balls, fundraising events), she chooses elegant dresses by Narciso Rodríguez, Armani, Ralph Lauren and Zac Posen. Her working outfit are very masculine, with Oxford shirts by Banana Republic, L’Wren Scott skirts, The Row dresses… Her shoes are a pair of black Louboutins. She’s also worn Calvin Klein and Prada. Oh, and the Yves Saint Laurent bag, of course.

Tom Broeckler, costume designer, said in an interview to Fashionista that Claire’s clothes are her armor, she uses them as a shield. You can see on the series how restrained she is. On the one hand, she has to dress well because she’s the wife of a congressmen, but on the other hand, she has to be discreet because she runs a fundraiser.

It’s the best character in terms of costume design. The clothes are a great expression of her personality and her troubles.

El vestuario de Claire está diseñado para que se aprecie la precisión y la exactitud de su personalidad. Por esta razón, todo está confeccionado a medida, como si acudiera a un sastre para llenar su armario. Se trata de vestidos de diseñadores de alta gama que han sido modificados para que se adapten a la figura de Robin Wright a la perfección. Claire es una persona rígida, lo tiene todo controlado. Nunca luce conjuntos llamativos ni con estampados, siempre opta por tonos en la gama de los grises, negros, y blancos, y de líneas minimalistas. Incluso sus estilismos para hacer footing son impecables. Suele llevar faldas lápiz. Para las ocasiones especiales (galas, recaudaciones de fondos), lleva vestidos elegantes de Narciso Rodríguez, Armani, Ralph Lauren y Zac Posen. En la oficina es muy masculina, con camisas Oxford de Banana Republic, faldas de L’Wren Scott, vestidos de The Row. Sus zapatos son unos tacones negros de Louboutin. También ha llevado esta temporada prendas de Calvin Klein y de Prada. Y sin olvidar el bolso de Yves Saint Laurent.

Tom Broeckler, diseñador del vestuario, dijo en una entrevista a Fashionista que la ropa es la armadura de Claire, la usa como protección. En la serie se ve lo contenida y cerrada que es. Por un lado, tiene que vestir bien porque es la mujer de un congresista, pero tampoco debe llamar mucho la atención, pues dirige una fundación.

Claire es el mejor personaje en términos de vestuario. Sus estilismos revelan muchísimo de su personalidad y de sus tribulaciones.

Broecker told Fashionista that he used to go to Washington and observe congressmen to get ideas for the men’s wardrobe. There are hardly any differences between them, as they usually wear the same suits and take few risks. The only creative license that Frank takes is a checked printed shirt. His suits are the most elegant ones, in the highest quality, and following the English style (as a nod to the original version of the series).

Broeckler cuenta en la entrevista a Fashionista que solía ir a Washington para observar a los congresistas y diputados y coger ideas para el vestuario masculino. No hay muchas diferencias entre ellos, suelen llevar los mismos trajes, y arriesgan poco. Lo máximo que arriesga Frank es con una camisa de cuadros. Eso sí, sus trajes son de altísima calidad, y siguiendo el estilo inglés (en honor a la serie original).

ZOE BARNES (Kate Mara)

I love Zoe’s character because of how intrepid she is. Even though she’s as self-interested as the rest, she seems to be the only one who has doubts about it (but she does it nonetheless). The perfect ponytails she wears (her hair is impeccable), her casual and fresh attitude… For her, fashion is just a tool. Her everyday looks are sweatshirts and comfortable clothes, and when she needs something she uses clothes to help her get noticed. That’s the case of her lucky dress, the white one. It’s actually from Zara, and was altered to look like an Alaia. Zoe wears it in two occasions, to accentuate her body and attract Frank’s attention. There’s also another white dress, my favourite, with Balenciaga sleeves and extremely elegant.

Zoe wears mostly Zara, Topshop and Urban Outfitters at the office. Logically, as she’s a young journalist and couldn’t afford to spend a lot of money in clothes. Her most expensive piece are a pair of Rag & Bone boots. She also has a jacket by American Eagle. As Joel Schumacher (director of two episodes), Zoe is at the trenches, fighting. And her style shows that.

Me encanta Zoe por lo intrépida que es. Aunque es tan interesada como los demás, parece ser la única que se siente mal por lo que hace (mientras lo hace, claro). Las coletas tirantes que lleva (el pelo siempre impecable), su actitud informal y desenfadada… Para ella la moda es un instrumento más. En su día a día lleva sudaderas y prendas cómodas, y cuando quiere conseguir algo sabe utilizar el poder de la ropa. Es el caso de su vestido blanco de la suerte, que por cierto es de Zara y que modificaron para que pareciera de Alaïa. Zoe lo luce en dos ocasiones en la serie para destacar sus curvas y atraer la atención de Frank. Luego hay otro vestido, blanco también, que es realmente bonito, tiene las mangas estilo Balenciaga y le queda muy elegante.

Para su día a día, en la redacción del periódico e investigando, lleva ropa de Zara, Topshop y Urban Outfitters. Lógico, pues siendo una periodista novata no puede permitirse gastar más. Lo más caro que tiene en su armario son unas botas de Rag & Bone. Su cazadora es de American Eagle. Como dijo Joel Schumacher, director de dos episodios de la serie, Zoe está en las trincheras, luchando. Y su ropa lo demuestra.

Prada Candy, by Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola

The Coppola family succeeds in the fashion industry too. We were just talking about the Miss Dior ad directed by Sofia Coppola with Natalie Portman, and now it’s her brother Roman Coppola the subject of this post. He’s joined forces with Wes Anderson and has directed a series of three mini clips for Prada Candy.

The mini clips have been revealed one by one this week, and now we can watch the full series starring Léa Seydoux with Rodolphe Pauly and Peter Gadiot. The story is inspired by Jules et Jim, the film by Truffaut from 1962, and the style is a homage to Bande á part by Godard (1964). The best of the films is the aesthetic, the colors of the ambient, the clothes (Prada, of course), their gestures, the locations…

This is the second time that Roman Coppola collaborates with Prada. He directed A therapy in 2012, starring Helena Bonham Carter and Ben Kingsley. And he was nominated to an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay this year, thanks to Moonrise Kingdom.

La familia Coppola triunfa entre las marcas de moda. Si hace unos días hablábamos del anuncio que ha dirigido Sofia Coppola para Dior protagonizado por Natalie Portman, hoy le toca a su hermano Roman Coppola, que ha unido fuerzas con Wes Anderson en la realización de tres mini films para la fragancia Prada Candy.

Durante esta semana han ido desvelando los episodios, y ya podemos ver la serie completa con Léa Seydoux como estrella principal acompañada por Rodolphe Pauly y Peter Gadiot. La historia está inspirada en Jules et Jim, la película de Truffaut estrenada en 1962, y el estilo es un homenaje a Bande á part de Godard (1964). Lo mejor de los vídeos es la estética, es genial. Las tonalidades del ambiente, la ropa (Prada, por supuesto), los gestos, las localizaciones…

Esta es la segunda vez que Roman Coppola colabora con Prada, en 2012 dirigió A Therapy, con Helena Bonham Carter y Ben Kingsley. En la última edición de los Oscar estuvo nominado a Mejor Guión Original por Moonrise Kingdom.
