The Bling Ring is Sofia Coppola’s newest film (the screenplay is also hers). This time, Kirsten Dunst or Scarlett Johansson (her biggest muses) aren’t on it, Emma Watson is the chosen one now. If we have in mind Sofia’s good eye when discovering new talents (like Elle Fanning), we can say that Emma Watson is the next big thing.
The movie is based on a true story and it tells how a gang of teenagers obsessed with celebrities robbed several houses and thousands of dollars worth in clothes and jewellery. They lived in Calabasas, California, and they used the Internet (mostly Twitter) to track down their favourite celebrities and find out the best time to get into their houses. Paris Hilton was one of the victims, and it’s estimated that they stole more than 3 million dollars in cash, jewellery, and luxury items from celebrities like Rachel Bilson, Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr, Lindsay Lohan, Megan Fox…. The robberies took place between October 2008 and August 2009. It was a journalist from Vanity Fair who surfaced their story.

Emma Watson plays a member of the gang. Rachel Lee (played by Katie Chang, true protagonist of the movie) was the leader of the group. She was chosen the “Best Dressed” of her High School in 2007, was obsessed with reality TV, and was arrested once for stealing $85 in products from Sephora. Five more members formed the gang. They stole clothes, credit cards they found in cars with the doors opened… Some of them were sentenced to three months to four years in prison.
They chose their victims based on their style. That is, they only robbed celebrities that were “fashion icons” for them because they wanted their wardrobe. They chose Paris Hilton because they thought she would probably leave her door unlocked, and Miranda Kerr because they wanted her lingerie from Victoria’s Secret. They stole Orlando Bloom’s Rolex collection and his set of Louis Vuitton luggage.
The movie relies on fashion in a very important way, but this time, it’s all about labels and fashion victims. You’ll see that the characters are very tacky and posh, à la Paris Hilton. Can’t wait to watch it (it will be released in 2013)
